Jul 8: Off Topic: Film Hacksaw Ridge

This ties in to seizures and being a caregiver. Read on.

I have a list of movies that I want to watch when I get a chance. It keep getting longer, despite me keeping a tablet or TV constantly running something.

Tonight, while browsing a streaming service for a title off my 'someday' list, I noticed 'Hacksaw Ridge' was finally available in my price range. Free.

Started it up for the noise and background entertainment while I worked on Weslee's pills for the week. Have to admit: I had to keep pausing it because I was sobbing so hard that I couldn't see the pill bottles in front of me.

Got me thinking a lot about wars, killing, and death. Naturally, my never-quiet-mind went there.

My inner dialogue:

Me.1: We were taught that killing was wrong.

Me.2: True, but what about 'holy wars' and the 'crusades'?

Me.1: Maybe some killing is ok? Dad was in the military. So was my current husband, and my wonderful nephew who has PTSD.

Me.2: Can I reconcile that in my heart? In my soul?

Me.1: Peeta, a character from The Hunger Games, had a great line when asked .. "so you won't kill?"  He responds, "I'm sure I will, like anybody else".

..........

As a mom of an epileptic young man who came seconds away from death in 2019, I fight hard every day to keep him alive. Surgeries. Doc appointments. Medications. Raising money. Favorite treats. Movies. Books about writing to keep his mind active. A/C to get him comfy. Taking the tantrums on the chin. PTSD.

Don't ask me if I would kill to save him.

You might not like my answer.

ETA: I realize this post sounded a bit harsh so let me say a few more things...

  • I loved loved loved this movie. I have since watched it another 7-8 times, seen over 10 "first time watching .. reacting" YoupTube vids, and sobbed each time.
  • I didn't have a problem with the killing, explosions, or the cruelty of the story. It depicts war, of course, and those are very much a part of war. I had a problem with the hypocrisy of christianity vs murder/killing.
  • Andrew Garfield was the only actor possible for this role. I still get goosebumps when his character converses with God before he hears someone calling out for a medic, and thus began his "one more" scene.
  • Vince Vaughn and the other cast members were also incredibly talented. I didn't spot even a smidge of overacting. Amazing considering how many background actors participated.
  • Mel Gibson is a visionary.  I am very sure he heard about what this Mr. Doss did... then it sat and niggled and tickled his mind, practically fully formed.
OK. I think that's it for now.

Apr 12: Off Topic: Film THE SIXTH SENSE

As I previously wrote, I love watching vids and binge-watching tv shows. But, unless it is a movie I have never seen before, I keep the volume reasonable and the movie as background noise while I write, paint, cook or whatever.

Am so glad Weslee introduced me to reaction channels and videos. There was a time that Weslee was a walking filmography of all things movie related. Too bad some of that knowledge was lost during his 2019 stroke, and subsequent swiss cheese memory.

These days, I enjoy reactions to those movies and TV shows that I have seen, especially videos that have a bit of a twist, like those written by M.Night Shyamalan.

Like "The Sixth Sense". Excellent writing, and such a creative imagining!

SPOILER ALERT

Watching, I wait for the reactor to have any hint that red items are deliberately placed, or that Bruce Willis has no real interaction with characters other than the kid, Cole.

When Malcom (Bruce) sees and hears his wedding band roll across the floor, HE begins to realize his true state of being.

Here, a few reactors begin to shed a tear or two. Just an honest reaction of sadness and a sense of no more opportunities.

Every now and again, I look to see if there are any new reaction vids of this movie... among others. I will almost always then watch.

.....

A very happy birthday to one of my sisters. May this new year bring you peace, love and contentment.

Apr 5: Off Topic: Film 'Encanto'

Weslee and I love watching movies, although our tastes don't always align. A few years ago, he introduced me to reaction vids on YouTube, where we see people watch and react to movies (or TV shows, musical performances, etc).

I have watched a lot since then, probably more than him, usually in the middle of the night while listening for seizures.

So I have seen lots of reactions to the movie ENCANTO (one of the best animated movies I have experienced). Reactions are all positive, and quite a few reactors end up spilling a tear or two.

SPOILER ALERT

One aspect I don't get. Mirabel (the main character who looks to be a teen) doesn't receive a magical gift during her door ceremony. Why? That is the question every reactor asks. But the answer, given towards the end, is often overlooked. THAT is what I don't get.

The answer(s):

  • It wasn't her time to get a her gift when she was a young child.
  • Bruno's vision had to happen first. Notice how Mirabel in Bruno's vision matched her current appearance / age.
  • Bruno hints at it, when he rejoins his family: "You are the real gift, kid."
  • Mirabel's gift: to be the next generation of Matron / Keeper of the family magic. That is why installing and turning the doorknob of the reconstructed house was an indication of HER gift... not just a door to a room, but a door to the entire magical house and village. She is set to take Abuela's place because Abuela (Grandmother) can't live forever.

Just my opinion. You?

NOTE: I think I will keep interjecting posts about art, videos and other topics in this forum. I am not just a mom of an adult child with autism, OCD, intractable epilepsy, partial blindness, and etc.

Had to cancel our Disney+ subscription because of rising prices on almost everything. It is a real bummer because we can't watch Marvel movies, etc., or rewatch Encanto!

Anyhoo, for the last 3 afternoons, Weslee has had seizure clusters. Trying to slip a rescue seizure med in between seizures takes practice, of which I have plenty. The rescue nose spray is easier.

Have a great day.
